Built to Carry

The MOLLE II Large was the U.S. Army’s main field pack for long missions. It was built to carry a soldier’s full load, including food, water, a sleep system and gear for several days. The pack is made of heavy Cordura nylon with near-infrared (NIR) treatment. It rides on a Gen 4 external frame made of fracture-resistant polymer instead of aluminum. The frame flexes under load instead of bending or cracking, and it’s designed to carry up to 120 pounds.

The main bag holds about 4,000 cubic inches (65 liters). A removable internal shelf splits it into two compartments. The lower one is a zippered sleep system compartment of about 830 cubic inches, with three compression straps, so you can get to your bag or bivy without unpacking everything above it. Up top, a drawcord closure with a water-resistant collar sits under a buckled lid with a mesh pocket. With the sustainment pouches added (about 500 cubic inches each, or room for three MREs apiece), total capacity reaches roughly 5,000 cubic inches (80 liters).

Out on the Trail

On a budget, this pack is hard to beat for rucking. The frame and hip belt put the weight on your hips, so 40-plus pounds stays comfortable over long miles. Hunters use the frame to pack out meat and haul gear to camp, and others keep one packed in the truck as a vehicle breakdown or get-home kit. At about 9 pounds empty, it’s heavier than an ultralight hiking pack. But civilian expedition packs with this capacity and load rating often cost $300 or more, and few of them are built to take military abuse.
