The Rolex Explorer was introduced by Rolex in 1953, the same year that Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay successfully climbed Mt. Everest. These two explorers used a Rolex Oyster Perpetual for their climb and Rolex used this occasion to introduce new technical innovations that would make this new watch the must rugged of the lineup for getting to any mountaintop. Eventually Rolex expanded the lineup into the Explorer I and II, both elegant and luxurious timepieces but which could still be used for their original purpose.
Appraised at $6,500.00.
