Ukiyo-e Heroes
Kaiju Sighting
Product Description
In the Ukiyo-e Heroes project, illustrator Jed Henry and traditional woodblock printmaker Dave Bull have combined their talents to create Japanese woodblock style prints that bring a surprising twist to iconic heroes, villains, and monsters across almost every genre. Modern costuming has been traded for the medieval, but the essence of each character remains.
This print was inspired by Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa." Artist Jed Henry tried to add his own touches of creativity by altering the overall composition, the shape of the waves, and the depiction of the monster. The bold cartouche says 'Kaiju." The smaller one translates roughly to mean "On that day we learned the painful truth, that these islands belong not to us, but to the gods."
