Ukiyo-e Heroes
Frugal Hero
Product Description
In the Ukiyo-e Heroes project, illustrator Jed Henry and traditional woodblock printmaker Dave Bull have combined their talents to create Japanese woodblock style prints that bring a surprising twist to iconic heroes, villains, and monsters across almost every genre. Modern costuming has been traded for the medieval, but the essence of each character remains.
The composition of this piece is based on the Yoshida Hiroshi print, "The Honest Grocer of Nezu" (根津正直八百屋). He wanted to show a slice of life from the pre-modern era.
The large cartouche reads, "腕犯漫" which verbally can be read as "Wan Pan Man," but the characters literally mean "an arm accosts in an unrestrained manner." The smaller cartouche says, "面白半分で勇者," which means "a hero for the heck of it."
