When making whisky, your concept of time is affected. Scales are shifted. You begin to think in years, not weeks or days. You are profoundly aware that it may be a very long time before you witness the slow-ripening fruits of your labour. Fifty years, in extreme cases.

Highland Park 50 Year is hand-bottled from just 2 sherry-seasoned Spanish oak hogsheads. These casks were first filled in 1964 and lay undisturbed until 2008. In January 2010, Highland Park married the 2 casks and introduced a little of the 1960 vintage from their earlier batch of 50 Year Old. They then returned the newly married whisky to its hogsheads and left them to harmonize for a further 8 years.

With only 274 bottles released, this is an intensely rich whisky with sweet notes of ripe black cherries and Muscovado sugar, which give way to dried autumn fruits and warm toasted wood. It delivers the merest hint of cedar-wood, wrapped in Highland Park's signature light and peaty aromatic smoke.
