Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) was a French post-impressionist who worked as a toll collector before teaching himself to paint in his 40s - especially late in life for the time period. Ridiculed and criticized for his artwork until his death, he eventually came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose played an important role in the creation of the avant-garde movement.
