Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Known for his masterful recreations of light, his taste for only the most expensive materials, and tendency to spend years on each of his pieces, almost all of his paintings appear to be set within his own home, featuring the same people and furniture in different arrangements. He died largely in obscurity, but after a rediscovery by writers and historians in the 19th century, he is now regarded as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
