John Trumbull (1756-1843) was an American artist during the Revolutionary War, and is noted for his historical paintings - this 1817 painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence can even be seen on the back of the original American two dollar bill. A graduate of Harvard at the age of 17, Trumbull was well-versed in history and politics. He also lost the use of one eye in a childhood accident, which is said to have influenced his unusually detailed painting style.
