The Future Mapping Company
The Constellations
Product Description
Featuring metallic seas and gloss-varnished land masses, this gorgeous lithographic map shows every star directly observable by the naked eye, indicated by magnitude and brightness. Also mapped are the nebulae, star clusters and galaxies visible from Earth, as seen from the northern and southern hemispheres, and brought to life with original 17th century illustrations from Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius.
Hevelius depicted the creatures and characters that inspired ancient astronomers to identify the constellations, and their intricacy contrasts against eye-popping, shimmering metallics and midnight blue, bringing the constellations to life. The result is a unique, educational map that makes a fantastic piece of wall art for dreamers and realists alike.
Featuring metallic seas and gloss-varnished landmasses in sublime shades, the paper version of this map is printed on the highest-quality, FSC-approved silk-coated paper, but it is also available in a plastic gloss finish that can be written on and wiped off like a whiteboard, and a magnetic metal version that can hold notes or photos, like a refrigerator door.
Each print is made using a lithographic printing process that works like a mechanized version of traditional screen printing. A plate is made for each color and then laid down individually, creating a stunning effect with maximum definition and impact. A sealer is applied to protect the inks and gloss UV varnish is used to add contrast and highlight boundaries.
