A mere 100 cases of the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny "Les Condemennes" were imported into the U.S., just enough to get the attention of the Wine Spectator, which gave this boutique red Burgundy 92 points, noting: “A fleshy, supple red, bursting with cherry, violet, mineral and tobacco notes. Well-structured and balanced, with a lengthy finish. Dusty tannins are offset by the fruit. Best from 2018 through 2033.”

Verdet’s “Les Condemennes” is a village-level Chambolle-Musigny. But the devil is in the details in the Cote d’Or, as burghounds well know. “Les Condemennes” is a lieu-dit, or single vineyard, and it sits right alongside the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Charmes. The young Verdet is a staunch naturalist when it comes to making wine. He farms “Les Condemennes” 100% organically and uses only native yeasts for fermentation. Made without additives or chaptalization and with very little sulfur added, this is a wine to drink now with duck or red meat or hold for as long as a decade.

A star on the rise, with a meteoric accession, too—Domaine Aurélien Verdet has achieved in in 11 years what few producers do in 50. The 2006 vintage was Aurelian’s first, making this 2014 his ninth year on record, and what a year it was. The Wine Spectator rates the 2014 vintage in the Côtes de Nuits 95 points and writes: “Juicy cherry and berry flavors, with freshness and
tension; lower alcohol. The best have added depth and energy.”

The winemaker’s wholesome, organic approach together without outstanding source fruit grown from 40+ year-old vines in the single-vineyard “Les Condemennes” (and in the shadow of 1er Cru “Les Charmes”) make this limited-production Chambolle a stellar red Burgundy from a stellar (and age-worthy) vintage, while Verdet’s youth and nonconformity make for a big-time bargain in authentic Burgundian Pinot Noir.
