2013-2014 Pierre Matrot Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots" // Pack of 2
Product Description
2013 Pierre Matrot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 90 Points
Perhaps best known for white wines from Meursault, Domaine Pierre Matrot is on a tear in recent vintages, producing Pinot Noir from single vineyards every bit the equal in quality to the estate’s famous Bourguignon blancs. From its limited holdings in Volnay “Santenots” Matrot produces a red wine that somehow evinces weight, power and charm simultaneously. “This rich red evokes cherry, strawberry, floral and spice flavors. The attack narrows as the fruit and spice notes converge on the pinpoint finish. Shows a light smokiness in the aftertaste. Best from 2017 through 2026,” writes the Wine Spectator, giving this Pinot Noir a 90-point score.

Matrot’s “Santenots” was made using a exceedingly light crushing of the grapes, native yeast fermentation and aging in French oak (just 10-20% of the barrels are new each vintage)--in other words, with precious little manipulation in the cellar, which allows for the vineyard’s robust yet graceful character to come shining gloriously through.
2014 Pierre Matrot Volnay 1er Cru “Santenots” 93 Points
Grow grapes organically and ferment wine as naturally as possible, this is the overriding philosophy at Domaine Pierre Matrot. And, while winemaker Theirry Matrot allows for yields as high as 50 hl/ha for his Chardonnays, his Pinot Noir vines produce considerably more limited yields—a key factor in this Volnay’s concentration and depth.
Limited, too, is the presence of new oak barrels in the cellar of Domaine Matrot, which means there is nothing to distract or overlay this wine’s ripe berry and savory forest floor aromas and its mineral-tinged wild cherry flavor. Though still a developing vintage, 2014 is shaping up to be a highly successful year for Volnay. The Wine Advocate says 2014 is “Outstanding” for Beaune reds, and the Wine Spectator rates the vintage 93 points. Hold onto this youthful red Burgundy for a decade or more and enjoy with red meat or poultry.
