The sweeps and turns in this Utah Calcite sculpture seem to arrive to a single point in space, similar to a passage or gateway allowing access to an ethereal location. The curvature and veins of the finished piece reminded T Barny of the waves and crests found in the wake of ships, prompting the title of INTROITUS: entrance to canal.
T Barny's works are produced through a method of direct carving, which entails no preconceived notions or models from which to derive the final shape of his pieces. Instead, he allows the natural rhythms of the materials he uses to guide him to a final product. Abstraction is his fascination, and power tools are his forte. He makes use of negative space as much as positive body, establishing an affinity with each piece he carves and evoking a feeling as sublime as the pieces themselves.
