William Julius Johnson played for the Hilldale Stars, where he received his nickname, “Judy.” Between 1923-1925, he won three consecutive pennants with the Hilldales and played in the first ever Negro World Series in 1924. He was named the Negro League MVP in 1929 and retired as a player in 1937. In the 1950s, the retiree joined the Major Leagues as a scout. He signed Hank Aaron, Richie Allen and Bill Bruton before joining the Athletics’ coaching staff in 1954. Additionally, he served on the Hall of Fame’s Negro League Committee from 1971 to 1974. After he stepped down, he was immediately inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975 for his multiple contributions to the sport.
