Art in Motion // Red Squared

Every piece from woodworking artist Ryan Kvande is conceptualized and handmade by him personally. He draws his designs onto Baltic Birch wood, then cuts them out with a scroll saw, before rounding the edges with a router and doing the final shaping with a belt sander. Each part must be meticulously measured using a laser-accurate drill press to help achieve the level of precision needed. The entire piece is then sanded by hand again, and colored with dye instead of stain, because it penetrates deeper into the wood and brings out more grain detail. Finally, it's finished with Tung oil, which brings out the wood grain even more and is highly resistant to water. Every sculpture is also equipped instrument-grade, sealed stainless steel bearings to help achieve the longest spin times possible.

The Squared sculpture is artist Ryan Kvande's newest creation. Although this piece is stunning when still, the steel bearings let it spin while mounted to the wall, and create a hypnotic pattern in motion that you won't be able to take your eyes off of.
