An Egyptian Faience Sherd From A New Year Flask, 18Th Dynasty, Ca. 1550-1295 BCE
Product Description
A fine green glazed faience, such flasks were traditionally offered on New Year’s Day, filled with water from a sacred pool. This spectacular faience masterpiece exemplifies the refinement of Dynasty 18 craftsmanship. Beneath the fine short spout resides a large collar with eight rows of intricately designed beads, two uniscribed cartouches decorate the shoulders with understated elegance. The back carries a museum accession number: 27.41.3 inscribed in red ink.
Condition: Fragment as described, the neck pattern very finely formed. An excellent study piece with superb provenance.
Provenance: Donated to the Minneapolis Institute of Art in the 1927 by Lily Place, deaccessioned in 1958 and thereafter in the George Ollinger private collection, Pennsylvania, thereafter in a private Pennslvanyia collection, acquired from the Ollinger estate in the late 1990s.
