Robert Motherwell

Robert Motherwell was perhaps the most important figure in American Abstract Expressionism. The first to coin the expression "the New York School," this painter and printmaker eschewed Surrealism and first-wave Modernism in favor of free association. Combining his psychoanalytic background with an impeccable feel for the imposition and weight of shapes on a plane, Motherwell led the charge for a new wave of avant-garde in America.
