The first balsam (herbal extract) was created in Riga, Latvia, a northern European city famous for its craftsmanship since the Middle Ages. The recipe traces back more than 260 years, and although the ingredients are not secret, only two people in the world—the master distiller and apprentice—know all the details of the renowned single-barrel process.

Riga Black Balsam delivers the magnificent power of nature—dark and complex when taken neat, but stunningly versatile when paired with different mixers. It's made from 24 natural ingredients, including 17 botanicals like wormwood, ginger, nutmeg, and valerian root to name a few. Once the unique single barrel infusion process is complete, it is blended with French brandy and aged for a minimum of 6 months in the porous-clay bottle just like was done over 260 years ago. Today, Riga Black Balsam is highly regarded by industry experts from many countries for its outstanding quality, resulting in more than 100 awards at international fairs.

The taste is bitter-sweet with complex herbal notes. It combines the gentle sweetness of linden blossoms, raspberry, huckleberry, honey, and caramel with a savory touch of ginger and nutmeg. Serve it in shots layered on top of mango or peach juice, mix it with cola, lemonade, or a cherry beverage; or enjoy it as the perfect umami addition to any type of cocktail.

Fill the serving glass with ice and all the ingredients, except Riga Black Balsam. Stir the cocktail and pour the Riga Black Balsam over it to create a dark layer. Decorate with mint leaves, a slice of lime, and a sprinkle with caster sugar.
