Using the tragic narration of Bartleby, the Scrivener this illustration inscribes a powerful and lasting image. A single bottle of ink sits stoically upon the table and is slowly emptied of its life force as a feathered pen dips and deposits its content upon the page. With a razor tip, the pen scratches ink upon the scroll in a thick laceration of opaque blackness. In this illustration, the pen-of-fate marks out the last subtle moments of Bartleby’s life. It ends in a sudden and violent splatter of ink as the pen appends a final period to the lonely scrivener’s existence and his future disappears into the calamitous depths of that ebony liquid.
