The Evolution of Bicycles
Product Description
With over 75 intricately detailed illustrations, The Evolution of Bicycles traces the evolutionary tree of the bicycle from 1780 to the present day. From the early high-wheel "boneshakers" of the Victorian Era to the first racing bikes to the more recent evolution of mountain bikes and BMX rides, each bike on the chart is categorized by utility and represents new innovations in a given bicycle genre over time. What results is a super-alloyed admixture of evolution, genealogy, famous models, and a catalogue of forms — a truly be-spoke rendering of two-wheeled transportation.

About the Designer
Ben and Patrick met while working together at Penguin, where Ben was a designer and Patrick was an editor. One afternoon while working to put together a chart for a book, they began to wonder why no one was charting anything fun. Moreover, while both of them had collaborated with authors to bring ideas to the printed page, they hadn’t yet worked on anything that was fully theirs. So, using his editorial background, Patrick began to research, and Ben, using his design expertise, began laying out the charts. Within two weeks, when they found themselves rolling prints and putting them in mailing tubes at two o’clock in the morning out of a cubicle in a co-working space, they realized they were onto something. Two months later, when their beer print was featured on “The Today Show,” they knew they'd someday be able to leave their day jobs and build a company dedicated to combining data with design.
