Product Description

There's a saying, “like a nine-eleven to a Porsche," which describes an inseparable couple. There simply aren’t many models in the automotive history that link back to its roots and are fundamental to its brand just as the 911 is. At first the 911 wasn’t supposed to be the 356’s replacement. It was meant to be its bigger brother, more grown up but still capable and agile as the original Carrera. Nor was it supposed to be called 911. The car we know today as the 911 was introduced at the 1963 Frankfurt Automobile Show under the model designation 901. Thanks to Peugeot, who claimed a right to three-digit model numbers with zero in the middle, the name was substituted to the now legendary 911. It also was the first Porsche car to feature a boxer 6 instead of the 4 pots used in previous 356s.

The new engine was supposed to be a lot smoother than its predecessors while gaining a little more performance. The fundamental layout on the other hand didn’t receive a change. The rear driven, rear mounted engine still remains at the very same place even these days and still (although today less so) remains the characteristic driving behavior present in the early models — best described thus: “Beyond the limit of adhesion, the 911 reacts like any car with a rearward weight bias, and spins, or, if you're quick enough to catch it, power-slides like an old dirt-track roadster.”
