Porsche 911 Carrera RS
Product Description
As the 917 era was slowly dying out, Porsche sought for a replacement for the victorious race car. The replacement was to be the 911 RSR which, in order to be qualified, had to be based upon a production car. Thus the Carrera RS, short for “Renn sport” was created. Ironically, one of the most sought-after 911s almost never have seen the light out of the factory, wouldn’t it have been for the newly appointed CEO Ernst Fuhrmann. The sales in the beginning of the 70s dropped rapidly and Porsche’s marketing team was very skeptical about adding more models to the lineup, especially “bare” ones, like the RS. Fuhrmann, being a brave man, stepped into the game and said that they would either make the homologation minimum of 250 models or none at all.
Porsche in the end decided to go for it and make a limited production run of just 500 units, which sold out immediately, after the car's debut at 1972 Paris Auto Show. The demand for the car was so high that Porsche ultimately produced 1090 more. As Porsche’s car became heavier, more comfortable and understeered more, the RS was regarded as the best 911 by the most hard-core enthusiasts and even today, still remains the ultimate, driver’s 911.
