Porsche 356
Product Description
“During the war I had an opportunity to drive a supercharged VW convertible with about 50 horsepower, which was a lot of power then. I decided that if you could make a machine which was lighter than that, and still had 50 horsepower, then it would be very sporty indeed.”
Words above were those of Ferry Porsche, son of the designer of the original Beetle, who finally set out to build his long dreamt project, the Porsche 356. The very first Porsches were hand-built during wartime in Gmund, Austria before the production moved in 1950s to its current residence in Stuttgart. Despite being faster than any Volkswagens out there, at just 40 horses, they certainly weren’t fast compared to other sports cars on the market. What they were, however, was different. Starting from the car’s air-cooled sound to the rear-engined balance the car felt as from another world — even more so to American buyers, being used to big muscle cars with big V8s.
