2022-M 1 Ounce Spanish Gold Doubloon // Toro (Bull) // Reverse Proof // NGC Certified MS69 First Day of Issue
Product Description
Own a piece of history with the world debut of the Spanish Gold Doubloon. In December of 2021, Spain joined a select group of other countries issuing their own modern gold bullion coins, marking a new milestone in their rich tradition of minting silver and gold coins in Spain and the New World between the 16th and 19th centuries. The driving force for the new bullion series, designed by the revered Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de la Moneda (Royal Spanish Mint) is to showcase Spain’s rich numismatic history and pay tribute to the country’s storied and vibrant culture. Unlike most bullion coins, the new Spanish coins are struck in reverse proof—a process in which the coin blank is specially prepared in matte finish, while the raised designs exhibit a shiny mirrored surface, which is the opposite of traditional proof collector coins. Manufacturing is done on a manual minting machine under the strictest technical controls, piece by piece. Each coin in the series is individually encapsulated and has strictly limited mintages, including a scarce quantity of highly collectible First Strike and First Day of Issue
specimens prepared especially for collectors.
Building upon the inaugural 2021 Spanish Gold Lynx, the 2022 1-ounce Spanish Toro (Bull) Gold Doubloon represents the second 1-ounce coin in the Spanish bullion series. Offered here is a 2022 Spanish Toro Gold Doubloon certified by NGC in MS69 (out of 70) condition. Each coin is guaranteed struck on the first day of issue. The obverse (front) of the coin displays a newly redesigned Pillars of Hercules, which more closely reflects the Spanish pieces-of-eight. These historically important pillars are thought to be the precursor of the American Dollar sign ($). The Pillars of Hercules bear the motto “PLUS VLTRA” (more beyond) and flank two globes-- symbolizing the Eastern and Western hemispheres (New & Old Worlds), joined under the royal crown of Spain and over a sea with waves. The Royal Spanish Mint has also incorporated a revolutionary and innovative anti-counterfeiting security feature on the obverse of this coin-- the “Quadruple Latent Image,” which is unique to any bullion coin ever minted in the history of the world and represents the first major advancement in anti-counterfeit technology in over a decade. Four images are hidden in a raised circular area at the 12 o’clock position such that when viewed at different angles of incidence of light, the displayed image will vary between the Madrid mintmark, five-pointed star, euro symbol, and silhouette of the “Columnarios.” Below the primary design is the text 1 ONZA 999.9 ORO (1 OUNCE 999.9 GOLD). The reverse of the coin features a stunning depiction of Spain’s legendary cultural icon—The Toro (Bull). The face value of 1.5 EURO, 2022 date, TORO, and the Real Casa mintmark— a crowned M denoting Madrid—are also depicted. Each coin is presented in a plush-lined display box produced by the Royal Spanish Mint with gold lettering and certificate of authenticity.
