1878-1904 U.S. Morgan Silver Dollar // Mint State Condition // Wood Presentation Box
Product Description
The Morgan Silver Dollar is among the most historic United States coins ever minted. You will receive one coin housed in a luxurious matte black wood box lined in velvet with a certificate of authenticity. The coin is unconditionally guaranteed to be genuine, dated between 1878 and 1904, and will match the exceptional mint state quality of the one shown.
Named after the designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, this coin was produced from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. The obverse of the coin depicts Liberty as a youthful woman wearing a Phrygian cap, originally worn by emancipated slaves of ancient Rome, together with a headdress of cotton and wheat— staples of the U.S. economy. The reverse features an American bald eagle with outstretched wings, symbolic of the power of the U.S. government. The eagle bears in its great talons both an olive branch and 3 arrows, representing a nation of peace but one that is poised for war.
The dollar was authorized by the passage of the Bland-Allison Act in 1878, which required the Treasury to purchase an enormous 2 to 4 million dollars’ worth of silver each month to be coined into dollars. Later, in 1918, passage of the Pittman Act ultimately led to the melting of over 270 million Morgan dollars held in treasury reserves. Today, the choice few that remain are cherished specimens of a bygone era that serve to immortalize the memory of a young, prosperous, and powerful United States of America.

What condition are the coins in?The coins are in mint-state condition, generally in the MS61-MS63 range on the 70-point scale.
Is this pictured coin one of them? If so, what is this one rated at?The coin shown in the photos is in mint state condition. We would grade it Mint State-63 (MS63) on the official 70-point grading scale. Mint state coins occupy 11 points on the scale, from MS60 to MS70 consecutively. A mint state coin (grade MS60 or higher) has no discernible wear. It will, however, have surface contact marks, also called "bag marks" which result from these heavy coins coming in contact with each other as they fall from the minting press, down chutes, into wood boxes, get dumped into canvas bags of 1,000 coins, and transported, by horse and carriage at the time, and eventually steam locomotives, to the government reserves and ultimately to banks for distribution. As you can imagine this process 120+ years ago, these soft silver coins are going to get marked up before they are even circulated. Hence there is an 11 point range for Mint State grades. MS63 is a decent looking coin as mint state coins go, though they get even better looking as you increase towards MS70 (which actually is not known to exist in 120-year-old coins). The coins offered here are quite nice for their age.
