Product Description

Tens of billions of coins are minted annually in the United States. Exacting production standards and rigorous quality control measures ensure that an infinitesimal number of errors occur during this closely guarded process. Those rare errors that do result are typically identified by keen U.S. Mint employees, who ensure that malformed and misshapen pieces never escape the confines of the minting facility.

Arguably one of the most dramatic and spectacular minting errors is the bonded planchet. Bonded coins occur when the feeder system, which supplies blanks to the coin press, malfunctions and jams. When this occurs, a struck coin is not properly ejected and another planchet is fed into the collar and struck. This struck coin will land on top of the previously un-ejected coin and get “bonded” to it. Multiple blanks may become bonded and struck before being ejected from the coin press. The result is an oversized and irregularly shaped cluster of coins that are permanently stuck together in a unique way, with varying degrees of identifiable details.

Offered here is an exceptional example of a bonded cluster of 2 Roosevelt dime planchets struck at least 4 times and certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation to be in Mint-State 67 (out of 70) condition. It is unclear how this very rare and unique piece was released for circulation, though some postulate that it was deliberately allowed to leave the mint by employees who turned a blind eye to its accidental creation.

You will receive the exact error coin shown in the photos housed within a velvet-lined wood box and accompanied by an Olevian Numismatic Rarities certificate of authenticity.
