1864 Fifty Cent Confederate Note T-72 // PCGS Certified Choice Uncirculated 63
Product Description
The necessity for federally issued U.S. paper currency originated because of the dire need for money to finance the Civil War. Similarly, the aspiring Confederate States of America also needed to institute a monetary system of its own. The Confederate Treasurer Christopher Memminger initially laid out a plan geared for a young nation at peace. Within months, however, that nation was at war, which accelerated quickly.
By the end of 1861, the Confederacy was blockaded and cut off from most of the world, making foreign trade almost impossible. To finance the war, the Confederacy made numerous monetary issues from 1861 to 1864, which lead to rampant inflation. By the time of General Leeās surrender at Appomattox, the new currency was worthless. You will receive the unique note shown in the photos, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
