Offered here is a rare shipping passport dated 1809 and signed by both United States President James Madison and Secretary of the Navy Robert Smith. This impressive document measures 20 x 16 inches and is printed in 4 languages: English, French, Spanish, and Dutch. It was issued for a ship named Jane guided by Captain Joseph Boyer on its voyage from New York to Lyon carrying cotton, ashes, tobacco, and other goods.
This document is in overall excellent condition and the creases have been professionally and discretely reinforced by a rare document expert to prevent tearing.
