100 Years of the Standard Oil Company: Set of 4 Stock Certificates (1870's - 1970's)
Product Description
Standard Oil Company was an American oil producing, transporting, refining, and marketing company. Established in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler, it was the largest oil refiner in the world at the time. The company was an innovator in the development of the business trust and successfully streamlined production and logistics, lowered costs, and undercut competitors. Standard Oil’s history as one of the world's first and largest multinational corporations ended in 1911, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a landmark case that Standard Oil was an illegal monopoly.
Throughout history, companies competed to produce the most impressive stock and bond certificates, with brilliant colors, intricate designs, and beautiful vignettes. However, with the rise of the internet and online brokerage firms in the 1990s, the need for physical certificates disappeared. One by one, companies quietly discontinued issuance of their paper stocks and bonds.
The unique set features an original 1870’s Standard Oil Company stock certificate as well as loan certificates from 3 of Standard Oil’s successors in the 20th century: Standard Oil of Indiana, Standard Oil of Ohio, and Standard Oil of New Jersey. A certificate of authenticity will be included with each item.
