The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge started in 1869 and took 14 years to complete. John Roebling, a German immigrant who had worked for his government as a bridge and road builder, launched the idea of building a bridge across the East River after he had taken a ferry across the river that ended up stuck in the ice. The Brooklyn Bridge ranks as one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century and remains one of New York's most popular and well known landmarks.

About the Designer
John Augustus Roebling (1806—1869) was a German-American civil engineer. He is famous for his wire rope suspension bridge designs, in particular, the design of the Brooklyn Bridge. He died before the Brooklyn Bridge was completed, but his son and daughter in-law saw the project to completion.
