About the Designer
James Hoban (1758—1831) was an Irish architect, best known for designing the White House in Washington, D.C. After emigrating to the United States, he designed numerous buildings including the Charleston County Courthouse, built on the ruins of the former South Carolina Statehouse. President Washington admired Hoban's work, and summoned the architect to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1792.
