Lucy the Elephant
Product Description
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, this 65 foot tall, 90 ton elephant is the largest pachyderm in the world, and reputedly the first anthropomorphic building. Lucy began in 1881 as a publicity gimmick for James V. Lafferty, a flashy 25-year-old entrepreneur who wanted to call attention to his beach-front real estate offering outside Atlantic City in Margate, New Jersey. This elephant-themed building boasts nearly a million pieces of wood and 12,000 square feet of hammered tin.
