Product Description
The Hercules Tugboat was commissioned in 1907 by The Shipowners and Merchants Towboat Company. At the turn of the century, many harbor tugs were built with wooden hulls with 500 horsepower. Hercules has a 150 foot long riveted steel hull powered by a 3-cylinder steam engine of 1000 horsepower. Hercules was purchased by the Western Pacific Railroad in 1922 for harbor towing around San Francisco until 1962. in 1975 Hercules joined the historic fleet at the Hyde Street Pier. Today Hercules is operated several times a year. She is the only oceangoing steam tug on the West Coast and was designated a National Historic landmark in 1986.
