Does the white pad charge the phone?

Yes, there are 3 possible spots for the phone, two white pads for wireless charging, and one spot to charge with lightening cable (instead of an iPad).

What is the difference between Lightning and USB-C?

The difference is just the connection types: Lightning and USB.

Lightning or USB-C is for the iPad or iPad Pro, with the USB-C charging the newest iPad Pro.

The lightning cord will work fine with the iPhone in case you want to charge it instead of an iPad.

To charge your phone, does it need to be out of case to be able to work?

For wireless charging, it depends on your case material and thickness. Even though we are not able to guarantee to charge with any cases, most of the cases allow a good charge with the wireless stations.
