Gone with the Wind became an instant success and was the top American fiction bestseller in 1936 and 1937. It was adapted into the 1939 film of the same name, which has been considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made.

Many novels have been written about the Civil War and its aftermath, but none take us into the burning fields and cities of the American South quite like Gone With the Wind. It is the only novel by Mitchell published during her lifetime. She once said that if Gone with the Wind has a theme it is that of survival. The main characters, irresistible Scarlett and charming Rhett, became two of the most famous lovers in the English-speaking world since Romeo and Juliet.
