Product Description
Antiochus VII Euergetes Sidetes (138 to 129 BCE) Silver Tetradrachm. 16.62 g. Antioch mint, Diademed head right. TTB-Superbe
Tetradrachm of Antiochus VII Euergetes (the Benefactor), nicknamed Sidetes (from Side) who reigned 138-129 BCE. The obverse portrays his diademed head right. Note the absence of wear on the high points. The reverse depicts Athena standing left, holding a small figure of Nike in her right hand. Her left hand holds a scepter and rests on a shield, upon which can be seen a human face. Again, no wear is evident. David Sear wrote that Antiochos VII, “almost alone amongst the later Seleucid monarchs,… ruled with competency and integrity.” He was killed in battle against the Parthians. He was the last Seleucid king of any stature.
