Apulian Kylix // Magna Graecia, Southern Italy Ca. 340 BCE //Ex-Robert Sonin, NYC
Product Description
A low pottery cup on ring base with deep bowl type body and two graceful, squared handles extending at opposing sides. Exterior with red-figure painted reclining figure, probably Dionysus holding a bowl. The bearded figure wears a draped garment on his lower body, chest is bare. Reverse with profile portrait head of a lady wearing a saccos and earrings. Palmettes flank the scenes and rosettes under the handles. One handle reattached, else intact.
The primary use for the kylix was drinking wine (usually mixed with water, and sometimes other flavorings) at a symposium or male "drinking party" in the ancient Greek world.
