Musashi Platinum Collection // Takemoto Kobuse II

From the Musashi Platinum Series comes this intricately hand crafted limited edition "Tamahagane Katana" forged by Master sword smith Takemoto. Using Kobuse-kitae hand forged technique, Master Takemoto starts by making his own Tamahagane steel just like the traditional swordsmiths of ancient Japan centuries ago.

The Tamahagane Katana is a rare and unique sword due to the labor intensiveness of the build and limited material. A total of just three Musashi Tamahagane swords were forged making them one of the most rare and collectable swords available.

Start by using iron rich river sand, Master Takemoto mixes the desired amount of iron sand and places them in to a tatara, a clay furnace. The furnace is heated to a high temperature of about 1800 degrees Fahrenheit and mixed with charcoal to add carbon to the steel. The process to just make Tamahagane steel takes up to 72 hours, and requires adding iron sand to the mix every 10 minutes. When the Tamahagane is finished, the tatara is broken and the steel is removed. As labor and time consuming as it is, the path to a finished sword has only begun.

Next comes forging the blade. Surrounded by immense heat while hammering the Tamahagane steel by hand and folding them repeatedly, Master Takemoto determines the strength of the steel. By using Kobuse-kitae forging method, the end result is a softer steel cord wrapped around by hard steel, giving the blade strength as well as flexibility.

Finishing up with traditional themed iron tsuba and accessories along with Gunome style hamon, the Tamahagane Katana is truly a top of the line katana that few can come close.
