The Old Guitarist By Pablo Piccasso
Product Description
The Old Guitarist was painted by Pablo Picasso in 1903. It represents a figure of an old, blind man playing his guitar in the streets of the city of Barcelona, Spain. This painting is part of his Blue Period, influenced by his poor standard of living and the suicide of a close friend. The figure of the old man appears in a monochromatic background that creates a flat, blue palette which accentuates the melancholy and the tragic feeling in the painting. The only different color in the painting is the brown on the guitar, which represents the only hope for survival, while the guitarist appears almost dead, which makes him seem even more miserable and longing to keep himself alive. Experts say that what Picasso wanted to do with this painting is criticizing the state of society during the expressionism movement, The Old Guitarist being an allegory of the human existence.
