Wheatfield with Cypresses is part of a trio of paintings that van Gogh finished in a frantic period after the completion of Starry Night Over The Rhone and his death in 1890. Like Starry night, it is inspired by the view from his asylum window staring out towards the Les Alpilles mountains.

Vincent van Gogh (1853—1890) went from relative obscurity during his lifetime to becoming one of the most recognized names in 19th century art. The Dutch post-Impressionist painter's work is characterized by rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color. Unfortunately, he did not start painting until his 20's and died at the young age of 37.
