The Great Wave at Kanagawa, also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is Katsushika Hokisai's most famous work. It was published during the Edo Period as the first in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. This particular woodblock is one of the most recognized works of Japanese art in the world. As in all the prints in the series, it depicts the area around Mount Fuji, including the mountain, which can be seen in the background.

About the Designer
Katsushika Hokusai (1760—1849), was a Japanese artist, painter, printmaker and ukiyo-e (woodblock printer) of the Edo period. In his time he was Japan's leading expert on Chinese painting. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hokusai is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, (c. 1831), which includes the iconic and internationally-recognized print, The Great Wave at Kanagawa.
