Starry Night Over The Rhone, or simply Starry Night as most people call it, is perhaps van Gogh's most famous work. It depicts the view outside of his sanitarium room window at night, although he painted it from memory during the day. Starry Night is the culmination of van Gogh's obsession with starry skies, and marks a decisive turn towards greater imaginative freedom in his art.

Vincent van Gogh (1853—1890) went from relative obscurity during his lifetime to becoming one of the most recognized names in 19th century art. The Dutch post-Impressionist painter's work is characterized by rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color. Unfortunately, he did not start painting until his 20's and died at the young age of 37.
