Grow your very own agaves from seeds while helping agave farmers in Mexico. Sourced from a rural Oaxacan semilleros, or seed farmers, these seeds offer a great way to connect with the farmers of Oaxaca right from your home.

It may come as a surprise, but agave seeds are very expensive and can be hard to come by in Mexico (especially the blue weber agave in Jalisco). For generations, farmers crafted spirits from a wide variety of local agaves, but with the industrialization of agave farming in the 1900s, blue weber agave quickly became the go-to variety for its ease of cultivation. As demand for tequila grew, agaveros (agave farmers) began harvesting the plants younger and younger before it had reached maturity and had a chance to produce seeds. And without seeds, agaveros had to rely on hijuelos—a clone of the agave plant—to replant their fields. This lack of seeds, combined with the monoculture of blue webber, means there is no opportunity for cross-pollination and leaves the agave population at risk for diseases.

Today, most Oaxacan farmers let a portion of their agave population reach maturity so they can reproduce naturally, which helps the strength and longevity of the species. Despite their sustainable practices, agave seeds continue to remain in extremely small supply.
