This incredible Aquamarine specimen comes from Pakistan, which produces some of the most spectacular gem quality minerals on the planet. These specimens are found in extremely remote mountainsides, usually at extremely high elevations. Because of the difficult weather conditions in these regions, mining is only possible 3 or 4 months of the yearend extracting the material from the steep mountainside is a treacherous task.
This large, multigenerational specimen is incredibly artistic and has a strong visual impact. The most distinctive feature is that the aquamarine has gone through a process of recrystallization giving it a wholly unique form. The characteristic light blue coloration of the aquamarine is enhanced by the contrasting white albite.
The associated minerals of albite and muscovite also serve to balance the aquamarine beautifully. In all, this piece boasts amazing aesthetics, a combination of minerals, a myriad of textures, and size. All of these characteristics makes this specimen a compelling piece of natural art.
Interestingly, aquamarine has been regarded as a precious stone since antiquity and was coveted by numerous ancient civilizations including the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. It Is a mineral completely imbued with meaning and symbolism. For example, many believe it provides a shielding property for the aura and was used by sailors on ocean voyages for protection. It is also known as a “stone of courage”.
