Product Description

First discovered in 1944, americium is a synthetic and highly-radioactive metal that's often found in smoke detectors. It's used because of its ability to shoot a stream of alpha particles into the air as it decays. In a detector, the Americium is connected to a sensor alarm, which is triggered when microscopic particulates - like smoke - interrupt the stream.

Modern smoke detectors use an infinitesimal amount of americium, but the original ones from the 1950s and '60s used much more, and the element can be harvested from them.
