Model Landmarks
London's Tate Modern Museum
Product Description
There has been a power station on the Bankside site since the 1890s, when it was known as the City of London Electric Lighting Co. The existing structure was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1945-7 and, as Bankside Power Station, it produced electricity from oil for almost thirty years. During that time, it became an iconic landmark and much loved by the people of London. In 1981, the power station stopped generating electricity and it stood dormant for almost twenty years.
In the early 1990s, the Tate Museum purchased the site and embarked on a monumental project to convert the power station into a gallery. The new Tate Modern opened its doors to the public in 2000.
Tate Modern’s vision to be at the forefront of the visitor experience when it comes to interacting with works of art took another brave step when they commissioned an extension to the existing building to accommodate performance and installation art. The new space incorporates the underground tanks (which used to store oil) and a dynamic new brick structure, the Blavatnik Building.
Beautifully boxed, your Tate Modern kit includes the original Bankside building and the newer Blavatnik extension and is the ideal gift for that architect friend, history buff, or even for you!
Each kit comes complete with all required parts. All you’ll need to provide is a good quality glue, a knife to remove individual parts from their sheets, and a flat work surface to construct the model. Select the Model Kit + Acrylic Display Case for a stunning display that protects your model, or choose the Finished Model + Acrylic Display Case if you'd rather not build it yourself.
To assemble this scale model, you will need a flat work surface that is at least 18" by 18"; white glue, brands like Elmers or Titebond Premium work well; and a knife to separate wood parts from the sheets.
