The hand controller works using Bluetooth radio signals, which can not travel through water. So when you fall off the board, the hand controller can not transmit a signal to the motor, and the board stops automatically.
Best practice when you fall is to turn the hand controller off, swim towards the board, get situated, turn the hand controller back on and continue to ride.
