Kentucky Owl was founded on the banks of the Kentucky River in 1879 by a local pharmacist, Charles Mortimer Dedman. For decades, they produced “The Wise Man’s Bourbon” under Distilled Spirits Plant Designation “No. 16”—one of Kentucky’s original distilleries and part of a booming industry—until its long and storied history was interrupted by Prohibition. Fortunately, the Kentucky Owl brand was relaunched with Batch #1 in 2014. Every new batch is an original with its own unique taste profile, carefully crafted by Master Blender John Rhea. These highly sought-after, artfully blended craft bourbons have become an instant sensation that sell out almost solely by word of mouth.

Like many of Kentucky Owl’s releases, Mardi Gras XO Cask Limited Edition is incredibly well balanced. The impact of the rum finish is prominent throughout, bringing an array of sweet notes into the mix that meld cohesively with the underlying rye foundation. In addition, a pleasant oaky funk hints on the nose and further materializes on the palate. The funk showcases the rye’s age, adding an interesting layer of complexity to the whiskey’s more dominant sweet-spicy mix.
