"The Pilot" is a riveting surrealist piece featuring a Virgina Pilot boat cutting through a winding canal. A hooded figure with a scythe can be seen on the boat, and a couple stands watching on top of a nearby book. This piece is representative of life and death. The hooded figure with a scythe standing on the small schooner represents death: in the end, he will have to say where and when we all will end. The boat cuts through the flow of life, symbolized by the flowing water in the canal. The thick book, which at a closer look has an hourglass printed onto its' cover, stands for the young couple's time still to come, and the nails assure they won't lose it.
