With its established links to the West Indies, linen, tobacco and roadmaking were booming in the city. And at that time, it was also the seat for the McCabe watchmaking dynasty, with both Thomas and James McCabe crafting beautifully made watches and timepieces for this ever-thriving strategic pulse. Both were extremely also concerned with Belfast welfare and prosperity, and as active prohibitionists, played a key role in the fight against slave traders operating in the city.
