The Inspiration // Ferrofluid Lava Lamp
Product Description
This Interactive Ferrofluid Lava Lamp has NASA-derived nanotechnology inside. The 'lava' is made of a magnetic fluid called ferrofluid. Like an ordinary lava lamp, the dark fluid will form blobs that rise and fall on their own by simply turning on the light in the base. Unlike an ordinary lava lamp, you can now interact with the 'lava' with ordinary magnets.
The ferrofluid can be pushed and pulled with a magnet, thanks to the iron content inside it. It forms geometric patterns and spikes in the presence of a magnetic field. The ferrofluid rises and falls on its own when the lamp is turned on, or moves they way you want with the individual magnets, for an innovative, interactive display that makes a great conversation piece on any desk or bedside table.

FAQ
It usually lasts years. The proprietary formulation is designed to preserve the ferrofluid. Some test units are still working after 5 years although some fatigue does show.
Do the hematite rocks stick to the outside glass (or stay still upon interacting with inside of lamp) like shown in picture? It all depends on the magnetic forces. If you have enough magnetic force on the other end it could prop up the magnet. The hematite magnets are not strong enough to stay propped to the glass on its own.
About the Designer
Kyle Haines is a scientist in the lab, but a kid at heart. He's the true innovator in the world of ferrofluid. The first to make colored ferrofluid and now the first to make a ferrofluid motion lamp. He has a degree in nanotechnology and left his job in the semiconductor industry to pursue his odd obsession with ferrofluid. He made his public debut on kickstarter and raised over $88K. Kyle has had engineers and businessmen fly all the way from Japan to shake his hand and ask him how he did it. But some things are best left to the imagination.
